Roadshow: Hybrid Owners Driven by Desire to Help Environment, Cut Oil Use
Q So why did I buy a hybrid? I purchased mine five years ago when the perks I now enjoy did not exist -- no carpool lane and no free parking in San Jose city lots, although I did get a tax credit and three years' free service, which brought the price to a more competitive level. It was the right thing to do. It helps the environment and also reduces our dependency on oil, a depleting resource.

A And . . .
Q We bought our Prius because it was the right thing to do for the planet. We don't always have choices, but when clear ones are available we should take advantage of them. . . . I like the hybrid because I would rather be less responsible for the United States being so gluttonous and weak with respect to fuels from hostile nations. . . . To save the environment and reduce dependency on Arab oil. . . . In a very small way, I hope owning a hybrid will help bring our soldiers home.
Kathy Stew, G.J. Kosobayashi, Henry Chang, Art Hicks, Hoh Le and zillions more
A Without a doubt, of the zillions who gave reasons for going hybrid, the environment and frustration over foreign oil were leading factors.
Q I just got my carpool stickers for my Prius and boy is it nice. Cut my evening commute from 50 to 25 minutes. Pretty neat. . . . Just being able to use the highways 87 to 101 diamond access ramp makes owning a hybrid worth it.

A More than 8,000 hybrid owners in Santa Clara, Alameda and San Mateo counties now have carpool stickers.
Q We bought our Prius because it made sense for the environment and my pocketbook. I estimate my gas savings to be $1,900 a year. That's money in my pocket, like getting a raise.
May Trieu

A Hmmmm.
Q The hybrid was not attractive until the $3,000 tax benefit came into play. That convinced me (and more important, my wife) to look into this.
Ketan Deshpande

A Wives do have that influence.
Q The Top 10 reasons why I bought a Prius:
• 10. Bluetooth phone, a wireless protocol that allows you to download your address book to the car and use the car to answer and make calls. Phone never leaves the purse.
• 9. Navigation system. Never need a map again!
• 8. Roomy, but small turning radius. I haul lots of stuff and am a terrible parker.
• 7. Free San Jose parking. No more tickets when the quarters run out.
• 6. Backup camera. Cool, but it won't be much help in the fight against my nemesis: the parking garage pole.
• 5. Keyless entry and start. I never have to fumble in my purse or jam the key in the ignition.
• 4. Carpool lane on 101.
• 3. Saves gas. Hate to see undeveloped areas such as Alaska or Monterey Bay tapped for more gas.
• 2. Low emissions. Global warming.
• 1. Stealth mode. Sitting on a rumbling combustion engine is so 20th century.
Lynda Sereno
A Now, to the sport-utility vehicle hybrid.
Q We bought a Ford Escape hybrid because it has SUV utility with better mileage and fewer emissions and to send a message to U.S. car makers that there is a market for innovation, even if it costs more. I don't get why U.S. car makers think we still want these bloated, boring, rolling living rooms for cars.
Dan Ross
A That attitude may be changing.
Q I like my Prius as a techie toy. I'm surprised that in Silicon Valley nobody brought that up. There's the smooth shiftless acceleration, the smart electronic steering and the nifty display that tells you where the energy is going. . . . The Prius is also a geek power car.
Joe Rolfe, Mike Trapp and many more
Q I got a Honda for $19,422. I was able to write $2,000 off my taxes. Wow, a car that gives back! I get to travel in the diamond lane, and I'm home in 25 minutes. I fill up every 12 days. Oh yeah. It's environmentally better for the planet. Hello? Anyone listening?
