9-Year-Old Boy Dies While Driving Adult-Sized ATV Near Ottawa
Provincial police are investigating after a nine-year-old boy died while riding an adult-sized all-terrain vehicle near Ottawa. The boy's mother found him just after noon today with no vital signs on private property near Rockland, Ont.
He was airlifted to an Ottawa hospital, where he was dead on arrival.
Police say there were no witnesses to the accident.
Investigators say they do not know if the boy was wearing a helmet.
The victim's name has not been released.
The use of ATVs by children has come under scrutiny in other provinces following recent deaths of young riders.
A 13-year-old boy was killed earlier this month in Prince Edward Island when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving overturned.
In October 2005, two teenaged girls died and another was injured in an ATV crash near Shubenacadie, N.S.
The accident sparked the provincial government to pass safety legislation in December for off-road recreational vehicles that prohibits children under 14 from driving an ATV outside closed courses.
