AAA: Average Gas Price Climbing, Again

Gasoline prices are at their highest levels since November. AAA has estimated the current nationwide average price of self-serve, regular gasoline at $2.36 a gallon. That's the same as the average price in Jacksonville.

The motorist organization said the high prices are partly due to oil prices near $64 a barrel. AAA also attributed the rise to seasonal maintenance at gasoline refineries. Such maintenance temporarily limits gasoline production.

Yet, AAA also described current prices as "somewhat puzzling," noting domestic gasoline inventories are near year-ago levels, when a gallon of self-serve regular averaged $2.03 a gallon, or 33 cents less than current prices.

Hawaii has the highest price in the nation at nearly $2.73 a gallon, AAA said. The group put the lowest statewide average at $1.26 a gallon in New Jersey.

Nationwide, AAA said the price of self-serve, mid-grade gasoline averages nearly $2.51 a gallon. That's up from $2.44 a gallon in the middle of last month and from $2.15 a gallon a year ago.

Self-serve premium averages $2.599 a gallon, AAA said, up from $2.53 a gallon one month ago and $2.23 a gallon a year ago.
